This is not what cash-strapped parents want to hear this holiday season. Today’s tots have gone high tech and even elementary school kids want the latest electronic gadgets in their stockings this year. A recent Nielsen poll showed that the top three most-wanted gifts among kids aged 6-12 are the iPad, computer and iPod Touch. This group doesn’t seem ready to start texting the opposite sex yet, since the iPhone ranked only sixth out of 17 items, outranked by other phones.
The teens had slightly different choices, choosing computers, smartphones and other phones ahead of the iPad. Both the iPhone and iPod Touch ranked toward the middle of the batch. Probably the most surprising result of the study was that the Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect ranked toward the bottom. This certainly wouldn’t have been true a few years ago, when the Playstation was one of the most desired gifts. Could the lack of interest have something to do with Apple releasing the new Game Center for social gaming?
The prices on these items are likely to make parents long for the days when all kids wanted was an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle, but at least you can’t shoot your eye out with an iPad.
